Special
interests: Haematopathology, dermatopathology and
general surgical pathology
Associate Professor David Ellis is a graduate of the University
of Melbourne and trained as a pathologist at Royal Prince Alfred
Hospital, Sydney. He has been a senior consultant histopathologist
at the Royal Melbourne, St Vincent's and the Peter MacCallum
Hospitals in Melbourne, and a full-time consultant with Melbourne
Pathology. In Adelaide since 1994, A/Prof Ellis has been in private
practice with Gramps Skin Pathology, Gribbles Pathology and
Clinpath Laboratories, where he was Medical Director until 2000. He
has also been a part-time consultant at the Flinders Medical Centre
and Royal Adelaide and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals, as well as
Associate Professor at Flinders University since 2007.
As a national leader in lymphoma diagnosis, A/Prof Ellis was the
pathology convenor for the Australasian Leukaemia Lymphoma Group
from 1992 and has been an invited speaker to national meetings of
medical oncologists, haematologists and pathologists throughout
Australasia for many years. He has been actively involved with
the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia through the
Anatomical Pathology Advisory Committee, as founding Chair of the
Cancer Services Advisory Committee and as a member of the
Informatics Advisory Committee.
He is past President of the Australasian Division of the
International Academy of Pathology (IAP), and currently represents
Australasia on the IAP International Executive Committee. Since
co-chairing the Australian Cancer Network Clinical Practice
Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Lymphoma in 2005,
A/Prof Ellis has led the introduction of structured pathology
reporting for cancer into Australasia, first as the inaugural chair
of the National Structured Pathology Reporting for Cancer Project
under the RCPA, Cancer Australia and Cancer Institute NSW, and now
as President of the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting
(ICCR), which he also represents on the UICC TNM Staging Committee
in Geneva. He represents the RCPA as inbound liaison to the Cancer
Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), USA.
David held the position of CEO of Clinpath from February 2015
before handing over to Dr Fergus Whitehead late in 2016. He
is currently working part time and maintaining an active interest
in haematopathology and dermatopathology.
