A graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in the United States, Dr Michael Metz trained at the Charity Hospital of New Orleans, the University of Minnesota and the Children's Hospital of Cincinnati. He undertook training in paediatrics at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, where he achieved the diploma of the American Board of Paediatrics and followed this with additional training in gastroenterology and nutrition at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. 

Dr Metz came to Adelaide in 1988 and worked at the Queen Victoria, Adelaide Children's and Flinders Hospitals. He has nurtured a keen interest in clinical practice, having worked in the West Indies (Haiti and St Lucia), among the indigenous people of Montana and Alaska, and in Rabaul in PNG. After 20 years of clinical work, Dr Metz entered clinical chemistry training at the Women and Children's Hospital (WCH) in Adelaide and the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science (IMVS), developing broad interests in laboratory-based clinical chemistry and its role in solving patients' problems. He obtained the MAACB and FRCPA as a registrar at the WCH and the IMVS.

Dr Metz is a past Chair of the state branch of the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists. He assesses laboratories for NATA and is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide. Dr Metz serves as a member of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry Task Force on Paediatric Laboratory Medicine.

Dr Metz joined Clinpath in 2006. His overriding interest is the role of the laboratory in assisting with patient management and he is always happy to be involved in the care of patients, always remembering that each of us, whatever age, is someone's child.
